About Putnam County Golf Course

Putnam County Golf Course was designed by golf architect William F. Mitchell and first opened in 1959 as Putnam Country Club. Mr. Mitchell used the natural landscape of the property in his design, resulting in rolling fairways and dramatic elevation changes. The Club remained private for many years throughout a variety of ownership changes and was eventually renamed The Country Club at Lake MacGregor for the lake adjacent to the property.

The golf course and surrounding property were purchased by Putnam County in 2004 becoming the first municipally-owned golf course of the county. The natural scenic beauty of the property coupled with a challenging 18 hole championship golf course has made Putnam County Golf Course a popular venue for area golfers. It is truly where “Golf meets the scenic beauty of the Lower Hudson Valley.”

“This classic course has two distinct nines…if you hit it like me, you’ll use all the clubs in your bag and play a lot of different shots from all over.”

Legend-of-the-logo

The LEGEND of the Logo

The recent change in design and branding of the property’s new logo carries with it historical significance ripe with legend and lore from the early days of Putnam County. The logo is actually a replica of a statue honoring Sybil Ludington on horseback depicting her legendary ride from Carmel to Mahopac.

On the evening of April 26, 1777, using a small branch to urge her mare, Sybil Ludington at the age of 16 rode a distance of 40 miles to awaken and alert the town’s people of Putnam County that British troops were approaching. Because of her actions 400 men answered her cries and were able to push back the British in the Battle of Ridgefield.

So it is only fitting that the NEW Putnam County Golf Course logo honor the legend and heroine of Putnam-Sybil Ludington
